Breathing Through the Storm of Life and Death

How Gràdh helped my mom find calm on one of the hardest drives of her life. There are moments when words simply aren't enough and this was one of them. My mom and her sister are what some call Irish Twins, born eleven months apart and more than sisters, they were best friends. Sadly, my aunt battled cancer for years and the dreaded disease reared its ugly head one more time. My mom had spent most evenings at the hospital, sitting beside her sister, watching her best friend, the one held all her secrets, knew every memory and shared a lifetime of love and moments with, slowly slip away. The grief was overwhelming. The exhaustion was visible. And when it was finally time to leave, the panic began.
As we drove home, her breathing became fast and shallow. Her chest tightened. She couldn't catch her breath. She wasn't simply sad, her nervous system had become overwhelmed. In that moment, I didn't reach for the perfect words.
I reached for Gràdh.
I placed a few drops into her hands and asked her to cup them gently over her nose. Together, we breathed. In deeply for five seconds, held for four and exhaled for six. Not once. Not twice. Over and over again. Slowly inhaling, holding deeply and slowly exhaling.
One breath became another. The frantic rhythm of panic began to soften. Her shoulders relaxed. The deep, deep sadness was still very present, but the fear slowly loosened its grip. We didn't erase the grief. We simply created enough space for her body to remember that she was safe.
That moment reminded me why I believe so deeply in the connection between scent, breath, and emotional wellbeing.
The aromas in Gràdh were never designed to make life's hardest moments disappear. They were created to help us move through them. I chose bright grapefruit and sweet orange to offer a sense of hope. Lemongrass and spearmint encourage deep, refreshing breaths. Cedarwood and patchouli provided a feeling of stability when everything else feels uncertain. Rosemary brings clarity to a mind clouded by emotion.
Together, they became an anchor. Not because my blend was magical, but because scent and intentional breathing invited my mom's nervous system to begin shifting out of panic and back toward calm. That drive home reminded me of something I now carry into every consultation at Nadurra.
We cannot always change what life places in front of us, we absolutely cannot stop grief, and we cannot prevent heartbreak - they are a part of living and loving. But we can learn to support our bodies through those moments.
Sometimes healing begins with conversation.
Sometimes it begins with stillness.
And sometimes ... it begins with a single breath carrying the scent of love.
In Scottish Gaelic, Gràdh means Love. That day, it wasn't simply the name on the bottle. It was exactly what my mom needed. And perhaps what we all need in life's hardest moments. A reminder that even in grief, love remains.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I truly hope that you can find a little comfort here.
Much Love,
Mel
