My Trauma led me to Aromachology

People often ask why I am so fascinated with the science of scent? The answer is simple. My own trauma led me here. I didn't discover aromachology because I wanted another certification or another business opportunity. I discovered it because I was desperate to understand what was happening inside my own mind, and within my body.
When my nervous system finally reached its breaking point, I did what so many of us do. I searched for answers. I worked with mental health professionals. I learned about the brain, trauma, stress, and the nervous system. Every person I met gave me another piece of the puzzle, and for that I will always be grateful. But I also found myself asking a bigger question.
Why aren't we talking more about the power of our senses?
Why aren't we teaching people that something as simple as an intentional breath, paired with a meaningful scent, can become a ritual that gently brings us back to the present? That question led me to aromachology.
What is Aromachology?
Aromachology is the scientific study of how scent influences our emotions, mood, behaviour, memory, and overall sense of well-being. Unlike aromatherapy, which focuses on the therapeutic use of essential oils for physical and emotional wellness, aromachology explores how the aroma itself affects the brain.
Our sense of smell is unique. It is the only sense with a direct pathway to the limbic system - the emotional centre of the brain, where memories are formed and emotions are processed. This is why the smell of fresh cookies can instantly remind you of your grandmother's kitchen, why the scent of a campfire can transport you back to childhood, or why a particular fragrance can suddenly make you feel calm, hopeful, or even emotional. Scent reaches our emotional brain before we've had time to think. That's what makes it so extraordinary. It isn't simply about smelling something pleasant. It's about understanding how scent can influence the way we feel, the memories we recall, the behaviours we adopt, and the rituals we create.
The more I studied, the more I realized that scent isn't just beautiful. It's biological. It's psychological. It's deeply human, and that fascinated me. Not because I believed scent was a cure. But because I believed it could become another tool. Another layer of support.
Another way to care for ourselves in a world where anxiety, burnout, trauma, grief, and addiction have become part of far too many people's stories.
I believe there is room for medicine.
I believe there is room for therapy.
I believe there is room for psychology, counselling, and evidence-based healthcare. And I also believe there is room for ritual. For slowing down. For breathing deeply. For intentionally engaging one of the most powerful pathways to the emotional brain.
That's why I chose to complete my aromachology training through the Tisserand Institute, one of the world's leading organizations in evidence-based essential oil education. I wanted to understand not just what people were feeling, but why. I wanted every blend I created to be informed by both science and lived experience.
Today, every Nadurra blend begins with one question:
"How do we want someone to feel?"
Not simply, "What should it smell like?" Because I don't believe scent should only fill a room. I believe it can become a ritual.
A pause.
A memory.
A breath.
A moment of calm when life feels overwhelming.
Nadurra has never been about replacing what already exists. It's about offering people another evidence-informed way to reconnect with themselves. Because sometimes healing doesn't begin with one big answer. Sometimes it begins with one deep breath. One meaningful ritual. One moment of peace.
For me...
That moment changed my life. And that is why our philosophy has always been the same.
The Ritual is the Remedy.
